I sent the below message via IM to one member and felt all should see it. I won't respond to any reply and, hopefully, Marc will either lock this thread or add this concept / word of advice to the forum etiquette.
---
I've found the best way to keep the board clean is to address people in private via IM, the moment the heat turns up, probably because people feel less defensive if their ego is not on the line, as public conflicts awaken it (their ego - self-esteem - desire to be loved - respected - acknowledged - dignity, etc.).
Try it. Email IM (private Instant Message) anyone who "has a problem with you or your posts" and say, "what's your problem with me?" If you can't resolve the conflict in private, it won't happen in public, on the board. That's my prediction. But at least you tried.
What is IM? Click on an active member's name. This should take you to their profile page. At the bottom of that page there should be a link to "send them a private message." After that, look at the top of the page everytime you visit the forum and you should see a "you have X number of messages" message.
If you can't resolve your conflicts with others in private, send them your love anyway. They might email you at some point asking for a chance at peace - a second chance - your forgiveness - love - understanding, etc..

I agree but sometimes when the fur is flying in these threads you can glean some understanding from the debate. I once contacted a supposed religious organization asking the question, "Given biblical scripture, did they think that Jesus would agree with our actions in Iraq." This man went into a email tirade, dragged in all kinds of political rhetoric about GW Bush and then basically debated my intelligence and patriotism. I realized from his blatherings the unsound foundations upon which most if not all religions rest. He never addressed the primary question and did the very things most supposed states do which is add to, subtract from or try to create illusion around the text they derive their substance from. Was quite enlightening.

Tharrin, how dare you challenge my thoughts publicly, and you, Rizzo, that's the last straw! I'll meet you both tomorrow, in a duel, no less! Prepare yourselves! Seriously, I've never been one to shrink from conflict, and quite enjoy it sometimes, if convinced I'm "right," it can just shed much more heat than light to bystanders, and leave all parties feeling rather wounded, less than they were when they began, rather than, etc.. Speaking of duels, rent the Firefly DVD then watch the episode "Shindig." Excellant duel therein ... swords too, and a freedom message to boot.

I know you have mentioned Firefly before, is it a movie or made for TV movie or a series? It sounds interesting. Is it libertarian?

TV series a few years ago. Too good for TV. Pure libertarian to the core. Adapted to a movie coming out this year called Serenity. Out on DVD.

Same players who were in the series. Better than The Matrix in the sense of the message being more clear / obvious for those who know something's wrong today. If don't mind having it ruined a bit, listen to show about it here: www.ernesthancock.com/archive/index.cgi?TopTenList

Do that again and I'll go to my bunk and get Vera. Dong ma? PS: Ernie's radio program is found here: www.ernesthancock.com/archive/index.cgi?2004-03-08-Ernie <-- It's a discussion with him and 2 FireFly fans (one of them runs FireFlyFans.net, I believe). Also TVTome has good info (http://www.tvtome.com/Firefly/) and for fans, lotsa fun episode summaries, quotes, etc. (spoiler warning if you look at episode descriptions it ain't half as good as watching it get played out in the series itself). BUY THE FIREFLY DVD. SERIOUSLY FUNNY, GREAT FREEDOM MESSAGE, AND UBER-QUOTABLE ;D (sorry for the all caps, justified right fellow BrownCoats?)
