many are good but I especially liked this one...
"Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." - SHAW, George Bernard (1856–1950)

"The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere." - Thomas Jefferson in a letter to Abigail Adams.
I find this one strange.
"This country with it's institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or the revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it". - Abraham Lincoln

The State is not armed with superior wit or honesty, but with superior physical strength. I was not born to be forced. I will breathe air after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest. --Henry David Thoreau
The authority of government can have no pure right over my person and my property but what I concede to it. -- Henry David Thoreau

From the movie "Lord JIm"
"If fear can find a flaw in even one of us, why not in any of us?"

Marc, and Slaves Freed,
That is why I had to put the disclaimer on the quote when I found it. Many of Lincoln's statements don't match with his actions.
This one is hearsay, as I can't remember where I came across it, but Lincoln was also rumored to have said,
"If I have to violate the constitution to protect it and the union then I will".
I haven't had time to read this one yet but an interesting book to review might be,
THE REAL LINCOLN A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War by Thomas J. DiLorenzo ISBN: 0761526463

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty-- and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies." -- H.L. Mencken, Baltimore Evening Sun, Feb. 12, 1923

"Most people prefer to believe their leaders are just and fair even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen aknowledges that the government under which they live is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of a corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one's self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all."

The Real Lincoln is a eye-opening book on Old Honest Abe. Once you read it you will equate Old Honest Abe with Used Car Salesmen.
I wonder how many people really understand what was reconstructed under the Reconstruction Act?

"Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." - SHAW, George Bernard (1856–1950) the fact that a rabid socialist made this very incisive (IMO) observation is especially notable

Harry, Great statement! In other words: A=A or A equals A Hey kids, here's an importance website discussing "my" Law of Identity, as well as other interesting philosophical stuff such as: the purposes of Law, a a great little all-on-one-page Dictionary*, and what the most common root problem of most philosophers is: Philosopher's Deduction Fallacy. - - - * for example, "GOVERNMENT" is defined... Genus: Organization Differentia: Within a specific geographic location that is dominant in physical force Link: Article "FORCE" is defined... Genus: A method of creating or sustaining any interaction Differentia: Not voluntary by all parties Link: Article "ANARCHY" is defined... Genus: Political Theory Differentia: Government is unnecessary and evil Link: Article <-- warning, this article is focused on politically-active (sometimes violent) anarchism, calling it "a call for disorder and injustice, hiding behind a facade of a promotion of freedom. In practice, it is violence and destruction." ...and hey they even acknowledge that "The initiation of force is never moral..." (!), so it's a great (and simply laid out!) resource nonetheless, keeping in mind its subtly implied anti-libertarian bias on the occasional page.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State." - Joseph M. Goebbels, Propaganda Minister - Nazi Germany
