Bruce Yandle has a wonderfully insightful theory of regulation he calls the Bootleggers and Baptists theory. Both groups want to ban Sunday liquor sales. One out of concern for others. One out of self-interest. Politicians who support such a ban always invoke the altruistic motive. The altruists give cover to the self-interested advocates for a particular policy. The altruists often inspire the general public to encourage politicians to "do something." But they lose interest in the details of the legislation. The bootleggers, the self-interested folk, spend a lot of time on those details making sure that the legislation is structured to line their pockets. - Don Boudreaux, 08May2007 "Cafe Hayek" blog entry

from an investment letter: Finally, (and this is a paraphrase), Munger said something like, "If you want to be an adult, you need spend a lot of time sitting our your ass reading. That's how I did it, and that's how anyone else can do it."
("Munger" meaning Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet's partner in Berkshire Hathaway's success.) - NonE

However, I've found that many of these hard-nosed, "it's a tough world and you gotta face reality" type of people (so-called) will put their hands over their ears and run away if anyone even hints at bringing up the subjects that we discuss here (e.g., the true nature of the state, of taxation, etc.)

"It can be discouraging when viewing this state of affairs. However, we should instead focus on the important parts ... In the end, the market is bigger than the government." -James Turk, talking about gold prices, but in the process [unwittingly] espousing a more general truism

"Terrorism is the war of the poor, and war is the terrorism of the rich." - Peter Ustinov*, as quoted by Eric Margolis, "The BIG LIE about 'Islamic Fascism'", 28Aug2006. - - - * Ustinov was a lover of the U.N. and indeed World Government (e.g. "World Government is not only possible, it is inevitable..."), but he still nailed the obvious in the above Superquote. For a frighteningly large collecion of quotes similarly-themed to Ustinov's gag-inducer, check this out: (amazingly, nothing from Gene Roddenberry!?) " THE ABSOLUTE, URGENT NEED FOR PROPER EARTH GOVERNMENT FROM FOUR THOUSAND IDEAS FOR A BETTER WORLD" by DR. ROBERT MULLER Former UN Assistant Secretary General Co founder and Former Chancellor of the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica I think this is my personal "favorite" (perhaps due to its brevity)"The only possibilities are now world government or death." - Bertrand Russell (oddly enough, the GMW.org website was found on the silly link page for this internet comedy show )
